Experiment 1: Office face powder

The Portland Black Lipstick Company understands how difficult it is to keep a matte complexion in the workplace, so our first lab experiment takes place in an office cubicle somewhere in downtown Portland!

Cubicle mirror
"Oh no! My nose is terribly shiny and I'm stuck at work without any face powder!"

First, locate your office’s first aid kit.  Thanks to OSHA, most work places come equipped with loads of fun stuff!  What you want to find are those cute little antacid packets—the ones with calcium carbonate as the active ingredient.  This is pharmaceutical grade chalk mixed with a binder and made up into tablets.  Chalk has been used for thousands of  years in cosmetics and can still be found in many modern makeup products.

First aid!
"Thanks, OSHA!"

Now all you need is a tool or object to grind the tablets up so you can apply the resulting powder.  I’m sure you can find something.  I like to use a mortar and pestle.  These work very well and make a great desk accessory.

Desky
The well-ordered desk of an office professional.

You don’t need too many tablets (anywhere from 4-10?) so rip open several packets of antacid and drop the contents into your mortar (or other improvised grinding device.)

Adding tablets
Carefully put the tablets into the mortar (avoid dropping them on the office carpet.)

I’m very paranoid about getting bits of things into my eyes, so I actually *do* wear safety goggles when smashing things up.  Besides, safety gear is fashionable.

Safety chic
Safety first.

Grind to a fine and uniform consistency.

Compounding
The joys of compounding...

Congratulations!  You’ve made face powder!  Now, apply it with whatever you might have handy.

Brush in mortar
Dip the brush into your powder.

Dip your powder brush (or cotton ball, or whatever) into the mortar and then gently dab it onto the face.

Application
*The Application*

After dabbing on the face powder, brush away any excess (or use compressed air, but don’t breath in the fumes or they’ll melt your brain.)

Removing excess powder
Remove excess face powder.

Thanks to Nora for documenting this experiment for the benefit of office workers everywhere!!

PDX Black Lipstick Co featured in Portland Monthly Magazine’s Shop Talk

Fashion writer Eden Dawn recently posted this wonderful write up and interview on Portland Monthly Magazine’s Shop Talk:

“When I think of lipstick colors, my mind jumps to thoughts of    cherry red, coral pink or maybe a sassy orange. What doesn’t usually pop into my brain are the words Bugs Blood, Irony, Pewter Cauldron, or The Black Lagoon. Well thanks to Kim Damio, creator of Portland Black Lipstick Company (PBL), my eyes have been opened to a world beyond the traditional lip choices.

Not quite sure if you are ready to venture into a world of kooky lip color? Before you dismiss the idea as strictly for costumes I can tell you the metallic Irony color, coupled with a shiny pink gloss, got me several compliments the other night. And just today I saw a picture of Debbie Harry from Blondie rocking some hypothermia blue lips. It might not be for every day, but it’s definitely fun to play with. I talked with Damio about how this unusual idea all came to fruition.”
